RMVB is one of those formats that enjoyed a brief heyday and is now almost exclusively found in old archives. The abbreviation stands for RealMedia Variable Bitrate, developed by RealNetworks as an extension of the RealMedia container. The key feature back then was a variable bitrate that supplied more data to complex scenes whilst keeping simpler scenes leaner. The result in the early 2000s was impressively small files with decent quality.
The format became particularly popular in Asia, mainly in China and Taiwan. Anyone who still finds an RMVB file on their hard drive today is likely to have it from precisely that era.
The problem with RMVB today
RealNetworks missed the boat. Current versions of Windows no longer play RMVB, macOS certainly doesn’t, and there is virtually no support on smartphones. VLC and FFmpeg can still open most files, but as soon as you want to share, embed or edit the video, it becomes a hassle.
Converting RMVB to MP4
MP4 has now become the universal standard for video files. The format is supported by every operating system, every browser and every reasonably up-to-date device, and the common H.264 and H.265 codecs have long since surpassed RealVideo – the codec used in RMVB – in terms of compression.
As the video has to be re-encoded during this conversion, there may theoretically be a slight loss of quality. In practice, this is hardly noticeable, as most RMVB files are already heavily compressed and the source material is therefore not high-resolution master quality.
